Steam is being tossed around as if it is the most amazing thing in this situation. The dirty truth is that steam will do absolutely nothing in a virus or disinfection scenario. The temp and dwell time necessary for steam to be effective, simply put, will damage your vehicle’s interior.
Bacteria is a regular and concerning problem in a vehicle’s interior. Regular maintenance is the ONLY way to keep it at a reasonable level. Now read that sentence again, “AT A REASONABLE LEVEL”. Trying to guarantee that we can perform surgery in a car because it is sterile is impossible and misguided information. What we can do is what we have always done as detailers. We can keep bacteria at bay with regular maintenance. This helps keep immune systems strong and the family healthy and sickness battle ready.
The fact of the matter is, if you are concerned Coronavirus may be in your car, DON’T USE IT. The virus has been said to die on surfaces within 24-48 hours and that’s being gracious. Again, these things can be found on the CDCs website. The goal of a detailer is not to line up 20 cars infected with the newest disease and attempt to sanitize that disease. That is silly !
